About us

PAUSE Psychology is a Southampton-based charity that helps develop mental health, wellbeing and resilience irrespective of financial situation.

PAUSE is an acronym which stands for: 'Psychologists Advocating, Understanding and Supporting Everyone'.

The charity aims to provide an array of support services to individuals. Services include problem solving conversations, wellbeing training, coaching services, and informal support groups. The charity makes this psychological support available to those constrained by financial barriers.

The PAUSE Psychology logo depicts Ivy, growing in and around the greek letter ‘Psi’, which is the symbol for Psychology. Ivy is symbolic of growth. Juxtaposed with Psi, the logo expresses the key philosophy of PAUSE: The wisdom of psychology, empowers the individual, and supports their personal growth.

What is PAUSE Psychology?

PAUSE Psychology was created to help meet the significant need for accessible and affordable community psychology for parents/carers, community groups (e.g. local preschools) and charities.

We welcome contact from people interested in accessing our support so that we can discuss support what we might be able to offer you or your organisation.

Please note: As PAUSE Psychology is a charity, the demand for support might be greater than the availability of sessions.

What is psychology?

‘Psychology is the scientific study of the mind and how it dictates and influences our behaviour, from communication and memory to thought and emotions’
(British Psychological Society)

Psychology helps us to understand ourselves and the people in our lives so we can all flourish.

What is an Educational Psychologist and how can they help?

‘Educational Psychologists are ‘hope-catchers’; when everyone else is finding out what a child cannot do, EPs explore what they can do and what support their need to be the very best versions of themselves’
(Educational Psychology Today, 2017).

Educational Psychologists support people to thrive using principles of psychology whilst working to the responsibilities and requirements of the Health, Care, Professionals Council and the British Psychological Society.

We look at what is going well and what might help; an Educational Psychologist can help your thinking as sometimes another perspective can help you see a way forward. We are trained to apply our psychology not just in educational settings but also within families, organisations and settings other than schools. We support children and young people aged 0-25.

PAUSE Psychology is not able to support:

  • working with children or young people to complete standardised assessments or in-depth assessments, or diagnosing any needs.

  • engagement in any work that could lead to tribunal or mediation. EP’s working for PAUSE Psychology will not be made available to attend tribunals/conflict resolutions/mediations about school placements or Education, Health and Care assessments.

  • involvement in Education, Health and Care assessments and not be giving extensive advice about Educational, Health and Care assessments/plans.

  • approaching schools to provide training or Educational Psychology work.

  • ‘poaching work’ from the neighbouring Local Authorities.

  • providing ongoing support unless agreed in the initial contact (e.g. for supervisionor coaching). Problem solving conversations are stand alone; people can apply for another session after a minimum of 3 months with the understanding that there is likely to be a waiting list.

  • providing therapy/therapeutic support or counselling; PAUSE Psychologists are not clinical psychologists, CAMHS or therapists.
